Where exactly is the Zillertal in Austria?

The Zillertal, with its 25 municipalities and a population of about 37,500, is one of Austria’s most internationally renowned tourist regions:

  • The Zillertal is located in the state of Tyrol in the Eastern Alps
  • It is approximately 35 km from the national border near Kufstein to the start of the Zillertal
  • The Zillertal takes its name from the Ziller River, which flows from south to north and empties into the Inn
  • It is approximately 140 km from Munich to Kaltenbach in the Zillertal

How do I get to Kaltenbach in the Zillertal by car?

If you’re traveling by car from Germany via Munich (A8 and A93) to Kufstein, you’ll cross the border into Austria. Exit the toll highway (A12) at the Wiesing exit and then simply follow the Zillertal federal highway B169 to Kaltenbach (about 17 km from the start of the valley). A toll-free route is also available from Kufstein via the B171 federal highway.

TIP: A toll-free route via Holzkirchen and the Achen Pass is an interesting alternative (in winter, only when weather conditions are good). From November 1 through April 15, winter tires are mandatory in Austria under winter driving conditions. During this period, winter tires are definitely recommended. It never hurts to have snow chains in the trunk as a safety precaution!
