FAQ Winter Holiday

How reliable is the snow in the Zillertal in Tyrol?

The Zillertal is one of the snowiest regions in Austria and the Alps, guaranteeing absolute snow reliability for your winter holiday. In the Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski area, you can enjoy winter fun on perfectly groomed slopes up to an altitude of 2,500 meters. Thanks to sustainable investments in modern snow-making systems and storage ponds, you’ll experience unlimited skiing from mid-November to the end of April.

The topographically ideal location of Kaltenbach and the Hochzillertal ski area ensures optimal snow conditions, available every day starting at 07:30 AM – a real advantage for your ski holiday, especially during sunny skiing days in the Zillertal. In addition to the Hochzillertal-Hochfügen ski areas, you’ll find many other large ski resorts in the Zillertal. A particular highlight is the Hintertux Glacier, where you can ski all year round at an elevation of up to 3,250 meters. A winter holiday just as you imagine!

How close is the Hotel Das Kaltenbach to the valley station of the Hochzillertal cable car and the ski slopes?

  • The valley station of the Hochzillertal-Kaltenbach ski area is just 350 meters from the Hotel Das Kaltenbach – perfect for a ski holiday right by the slopes!
  • For added comfort, you can store your ski and snowboard equipment for free in the ski locker at the valley station of the cable car. This way, you can comfortably walk to the valley station without carrying heavy equipment.
  • During peak winter season, we also offer a free shuttle service from the hotel to the cable car multiple times a day, so you can start your ski day in even more comfort.

Where and when should I book ski lessons for my children in the Hochzillertal ski area?

A quick tip: We strongly recommend reserving your ski lessons in advance, well before your arrival!

  • In our ski area, several renowned ski schools are available, including Skischule Hochzillertal, Skischule Ski-Optimal, and Skischule Keiler.
  • Our personal recommendation is Skischule Keiler – and for good reason: They focus on quality over quantity, keeping group sizes small, with a maximum of 8 people. This ensures individual instruction and personal care for each child.
  • Tip: If you’d like a private ski instructor (e.g., to refresh your skiing skills), we are happy to help arrange that. Please let us know in advance so we can organize everything for you.

Where can I rent ski/snowboard equipment for my ski holiday in the Zillertal?

  • There are several ski rental shops around the valley station. Our recommendation: Sport Stock – for good reason!
  • The Sport Stock ski rental is located directly at the valley station of the cable car, where you’ll also find our hotel’s ski lockers in the basement. This makes for short distances and maximum convenience.
  • It’s best to book your ski or snowboard equipment online before your trip. Not only will you get a discount, but you’ll also secure the perfect gear for your winter holiday.
  • Sport Stock offers a wide selection of high-quality equipment. An additional highlight: Besides the rental at the valley station, there’s also a shop at the mountain station, where you can try different sports equipment and enjoy even more variety during your holiday!

Do I need winter tires for the drive to the Zillertal?

Here’s what you need to know about safe travel to your winter holiday:

  • In Austria, from November 1st to April 15th, winter tires are mandatory when driving in winter conditions. Therefore, we highly recommend arriving with winter tires during this period.
  • It’s also a good idea to carry snow chains in your trunk as a backup – you never know when they might come in handy.
  • For a relaxed journey to our hotel, you don’t need to worry: The road leading up to the hotel is fully heated during the winter months to ensure that even the steeper access is always passable with ease.

What winter activities are available off the slopes during a ski holiday in the Zillertal?

In addition to the fantastic wellness area with a pool and Sky Sauna and cool indoor activities at our sports hotel, there are plenty of opportunities for non-skiers to fully enjoy the winter holiday. Here are the best tips for non-skiers:
