Family-Run Hosts at the Nature Hotel

We, the Stephan and Isabella Haas family, opened Das Kaltenbach as a nature hotel in Tyrol in December 2014 with a great deal of passion, conviction, and dedication.

This unique place, nestled in the Zillertal with its fascinating landscape and mountain scenery, never ceases to inspire us as hosts. Das Kaltenbach, situated on a mountain plateau in the heart of a young forest and right next to a mountain stream fed by fresh spring water, is one of Tyrol’s most special nature hotels. We call it a place of power.

We love sharing the values of our region, its culture, and traditions with our guests. Genuine hospitality is second nature to us. It’s no coincidence that Das Kaltenbach ranks among the most popular hotels in Austria and has been honored multiple times with the coveted HolidayCheck Award from the leading hotel review portal.

Das Kaltenbach - History

The property was purchased in the early 1960s by Great-Uncle Josef Haas and has been managed by the family-run Kornerhof farm over the past few decades. In 2014, after careful planning and design, “Das Kaltenbach” was built in the style of a traditional, authentic mountain village. It was completed in just six months and opened its doors during the winter season.

Stay in rooms flooded with light and fresh air—spaces that simply make you feel good. “Das Kaltenbach” is characterized by a sophisticated alpine lifestyle design, featuring fine materials from our region combined with craftsmanship of the highest caliber. Today, it ranks among the leading lifestyle hotels in Austria and is also considered one of the world’s leading luxury boutique hotels.

As a family-owned business, we embody innovation and vision. As a design hotel in Tyrol, our guests and fans can always look forward to new brands that inspire with top-notch functionality and exceptional design, offering a genuine vacation home in harmony with nature.

Your Host Family

Your hosts at the Hotel “Das Kaltenbach” are Stephan and Isabella Haas, along with their daughter Lea and sons Julian and Maximilian. We grew up on our parents’ farm, the “Kornerhof,” in Kaltenbach, with alpine pastures in the Hochzillertal and Tuxertal hiking regions. These deep roots in our homeland have connected us to the region from the very beginning.

After many years in management at a Tyrolean regional bank, Stephan decided, together with his wife Isabella and their children, to create a special vacation home in the heart of the Zillertal. This led to the creation of the exclusive apart-hotel “Das Kaltenbach,” which today ranks among Austria’s leading family hotels.

Hospitality is our top priority: Since its opening in 2014, Das Kaltenbach has been honored with the coveted HolidayCheck Award for many years, is ranked among Austria’s Leading Spa Resorts, and has been named one of Austria’s best hotels in the Falstaff Hotel Guide.

In 2020, the rooftop wellness area was expanded to include a pool and a sky sauna. In 2022, we added a new penthouse suite and redesigned the lounge and lobby, featuring the popular fire pit as a cozy evening gathering spot.

All FAQs

How did the story of our nature hotel in the Zillertal begin, and what do we stand for today?

Our family-run nature hotel in the Zillertal was born out of a deep connection to the Tyrolean mountains and nature. The roots of our hotel trace back to our parents’ farm and continue to shape our understanding of sustainable and personalized hospitality to this day. In 2014, the boutique hotel was built in the architectural style of a mountain village—using local materials, clean lines, and a spatial concept that prioritizes function over design. The unique mountain setting, which exudes tranquility and a sense of vastness, delights our guests just as much as the harmonious blend of Alpine tradition, contemporary comfort, and deliberately minimalist design.

What makes the architecture and interior design of our boutique hotel in the Zillertal so special?

The architecture of our boutique hotel is inspired by the layout of a traditional mountain village and has been given a contemporary twist. We primarily used local materials such as wood and stone, combined with select design elements and high-quality brands. Large windows and plenty of natural light create a deliberate harmony between the interior and nature. At the heart of the design is a well-thought-out spatial concept that prioritizes functionality over design—clear, calm, and minimalist. Hostess Isabella brings her refined sense of lifestyle and design to the project, creating an atmosphere that blends alpine character with modern ease.

Who are the hosts, and what defines their personal style?

Host Stephan is a certified mountain hiking guide and passionate mountaineer who knows the Tyrolean mountains firsthand. His expertise in the mountains is evident in his personalized tour recommendations, as well as in guided hikes and select bike tours, where experiencing nature and safety are the top priorities. Together with Isabella, who brings a keen sense of lifestyle, design, and atmosphere to the table, they run the boutique hotel as a family business. Personalized service, a genuine connection to nature, and genuine hospitality define the style of their hotel.
